Why is visiting the dentist so important?

Regular dental visits can keep your oral and systemic health in the best shape possible. Dental professionals can spot early signs of gum disease or other problems in your mouth if you visit one twice a year. The earlier a problem is caught, the easier treatment will be. Plus, frequent dental visits can ensure you maintain a beautiful smile!

How often should I get a dental checkup?

Patients are generally encouraged to visit a dentist twice a year. However, if your dental health is in bad condition, you might need to see a dentist even more frequently.

How can I take care of my oral health at home?

Practicing good hygiene at home is easy and can make your dental checkups a breeze. Here are some quick tips for taking care of your teeth and mouth between visits.

  • Brush twice daily and floss once daily
  • Use products containing fluoride
  • Limit sugary foods and drinks
  • Avoid tobacco
  • Eat a balanced diet

What is a dental x-ray, and why do I need one?

Dental x-rays are how we can see the condition of your teeth and mouth. They’re generally taken during your first visit to help us monitor any changes between appointments. Dental x-rays can spot any concerning things in your mouth and allow us to come up with the best treatment plan for you.

Do I still need to see a dentist if I have excellent oral hygiene?

Even if you brush and floss every day, have a good diet, and are a non-smoker, visiting a dentist is still encouraged. They might be able to find some problems that you aren’t aware of. Even if you do brush and floss daily, getting professional cleanings at the dentist wouldn’t hurt!

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is also known as gum disease, and it’s an infection in the gums that damages soft tissue. It’s generally caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria that has not been treated early on. That’s known as gingivitis. Without addressing periodontitis, you could be facing bigger issues like tooth loss.

Why are my teeth so sensitive?

Tooth sensitivity can occur for various reasons and is often triggered when a person drinks something hot or cold. It happens because your enamel is thinning. Common reasons people may experience thinning enamel and sensitive teeth are receding gums, bruxism, or fractured or chipped teeth. People may also experience sensitive teeth after a whitening treatment.

How do I properly brush my teeth?

To properly brush your teeth, make sure the toothbrush has soft bristles and can fit your mouth. Hold it at a 45-degree angle to your gums and gently brush in a circular motion to get the surface and gums. Brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of your teeth, and don’t forget to brush your tongue. The whole process should be about two minutes.

What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

If one of your permanent teeth has gotten knocked out, try to gently put it back in its socket right away. If that doesn’t work, keep it moist at all times, either by putting it in milk or in your mouth next to your cheek. Visit the dentist within 30 minutes of your injury for better chances of having the tooth saved.

What is fluoride, and why is it important?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that can strengthen teeth. It’s found in some water, tea, and toothpaste. Dental professionals always recommend fluoride and offer fluoride treatments to help prevent people from getting cavities.
